Search and rescue follows almost all of the principles mentioned above. Only in this case, we presume the suspect is not wanted and so is referred to as a “Victim”. Firstly we must find an item or clothing with a strong scent of the victim that the dog can then trace, like so:
Handler: /meall Searches vehicle for a strongly scented item, wdif?
Victim: /meall You find a T-shirt in the backseat.
Handler: (Allows dog to find the initial scent of T-shirt)
K-9: /meall Smells Item, do I find a strong scent leading to a trail/Direction of travel?
Victim: /meall You find a trail that leads westbound along the trail.
Following the same procedures covered previously, you can initiate the search and follow your canine. You must take into account all the same things, if you exhaust the search and the scent runs cold, you should call off the search on foot and hand it over to FD or PA who can launch a helicopter for an aerial search. If they possibly locate the suspect you can then move back in and continue the search with a more precise location if requested.
If however, you locate the victim, you should not issue threats, instead, you should attempt to make contact and call in additional units. You should issue all standard Basic Life Support until medical are able to arrive and take over, or the victim can be extracted. There is a chance they may be perfectly fine, in this case, you still offer BLS, and check vital signs, etc.
